Overview
Komey Vishakan is Senior Counsel in Lozano Smith's Walnut Creek Office. Ms. Vishakan's practice focuses on board governance, student issues, Title IX, investigations, and litigation aspects of education law. Ms. Vishakan is an experienced attorney who has served in numerous roles, including in-house General Counsel for a California school district.
Experience
Ms. Vishakan is experienced in advising boards of education and school district staff on a variety of matters including board governance, the Brown Act, business, personnel matters, student issues, Public Records Act and Title IX. She is experienced in helping K-12 schools navigate OCR investigations, implement resolution agreements, and comply with OCR requirements during the monitoring period and beyond. Before settling down in the San Francisco Bay Area, Ms. Vishakan served as a prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service in the UK, and the two prosecuting bodies in Australia.
Presentations
Ms. Vishakan has presented on legal matters faced by public agencies, including presenting to the California Lawyers Association's Open meetings and Open Records Conference in regard to the Public Records Act and student confidentiality concerns.
Community Involvement
Ms. Vishakan is deeply involved in her community and serves as the Vice President of the South Asian Bar Association of Northern California where she helps run pro-bono clinics and a Board Member for the California Asian Pacific American Bar Association.
Education
Ms. Vishakan earned her LLB law degree from the University of Western Sydney. She earned her Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Economics and Commercial Law from the University of Sydney. She was admitted to the California State Bar in 2013.
